This series still around? Where were we? Oh yes, following the trail of Gah-Lak-Tus.
You know that scene -- in a movie of your choice -- where a newscaster or a talk show host is about to wrap things up and something happens off stage preventing the transition so the director is making that signal with his hands to stretch it out and then the host starts sort of rambling and filling the extra air time with non sequiturs and casual conversation? That’s this issue.
This is your standard, “We need six issues for the trade release so we better pad the page count somewhere” book. Now you would think it might be more fluid and less intrusive to scatter this sort of thing throughout the miniseries, but hey, get it all out of the way in one fell swoop and move on with the story works too.
Unfortunately, Ellis’ snappy banter and clever repartee fall flat. This kind of stuff worked well in small doses but isn't nearly snappy or clever enough to carry a whole issue. And am I mistaken, or is Hawkeye referencing Cap’s , “You think this A stands for France,” line before he ever says it? Being as these events are supposed to take place before those in ULTIMATES 2?
So it’s essentially a filler issue. Pretty disappointing considering the time between this and the last one and even more disappointing considering how good the first two issues were. Maybe in TPB this won’t be so glaring a work stoppage.
Cap said it in Ultimates 1 though, issue 12.
