Ummm, okay. Maybe. Well…no.
I’ve been waiting. I’ve been patient. I want this to be good. But this issue was way short of good. I want a book with Iron Man, Cap, Spider-man, Luke Cage and Wolverine to be stone cold awesome. And this ain’t. I want huge battle scenes, intergalactic melees and I’m getting 14 pages of group therapy and a tussle with a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. third stringers.
There was this HUUUGE buildup to Sauron and then he gets taken down in about two panels. Yeah, he’s scary. In some other book -- can’t remember the title -- the Savage Land was under like forty feet of snow. Must have been the North Savage Land since there’s no sign of that here. And don’t get me started on S.H.I.E.L.D. Bendis’ S.HI.E.L.D. has so many leaks they should just change the name to C.O.L.A.N.D.E.R. We’ll fill in the acronym later. And finally there’s Thor…err…Sentry. He’s on the cover again, and not in the book, again. This guy is getting a bigger buildup than Joey. He darn well better be worth it.
And you know, I kind of liked the Raft issues. Lot’s of good guys kicking tail on lot’s of bad guys. That’s what the Avengers should be about. Forget the conspiracy theory stuff. And the Savage Land? Acch. Man, I hope Wanda wipes that place out. Finally, please, get – rid – of – Spiderwoman. Now. I know it seemed really clever at the time: Hey, we’ll put Spider-man and Spiderwoman on the team. No one will see that coming. No one cares. Get rid of her and bring back She-Hulk. Or Wasp. Or Valkyrie. Please, I’m begging here. Get rid of her and I promise I’ll keep reading. Really.
I guess I should throw out a word or two about the art. It’s nice. Finch is solid, tells the story well – although his faces are bit indistinguishable. And about Spider-man’s neck - it cannot be that long, can it?
The book is probably not as bad as I’m making it out to be. Or maybe it’s worse. Either way this is the Avengers! Okay...the New Avengers! It should be better. It should rock. There is no excuse for an Avengers book not being one of the absolute best reads on the shelf. This needs to get better fast, we can’t wait for Wanda to retcon this whole mess out of existence.
man i'm with you - the savage land doesn't do it for me as a backdrop, and spider-woman annoys me almost as much as you. i'm not even feeling spider-man here (i do like spidey but he seems so out of place w/ this group to me).

Other amusing, amusing comic of zombies
Johnny Caronte: Zombie Detective
This is the story of Johnny Caronte… a story of mobsters, hitmen, and femme fatales. However, the characters in this dark tale have a peculiar trait - they are all zombies! It's like a Bogart flick meets Night of the Living Dead! Johnny Caronte, zombie police dectective, investigates the mysterious assassination of the mayor's daughter. The more he uncovers in the case, the more he finds himself enshrouded in deeper mystery.
The Revolver
The revolver of one of the most ancient and powerful creatures of Hell has been stolen, and the thief is using it to kill demons in order to collect and sell their souls. This new weapon yields great power, but Hell has sent a renegade demon to recover the stolen gun and bring it back. The fight is on!

Johnny Caronte is a mob story about zombies with a twist, and The Revolver is about a thief using a gun from hell to kill demons. Both good concepts, but the really interesting thing here is the artwork, which is beautifully colored but otherwise reminds me of the black and white (and gorgeous) artwork of Kazu Kibuishi and other Flight collaborators

Johnny Caronte, Zombie Detective & the Revolver Volume 1 GN
Alias Enterprises LLC; page 226; $5.99; 64 pgs.
The stunning cover art is what first attracted me to this book. It is the noir thriller filled with mobsters and hitmen, but the art looks darker and scarier than a plain old noir book. This book contains two stories and looks strangely gorgeous.

Bah, I gave up on New Avengers, which frankly HURTS because it's one of the few comics that I've read almost every issue of. Yeah, there have been teams and writers in the past that I haven't particularly cared for/about, but not like this. I see Bendis widely praised as a great writer, but, man, I don't see it. Clunky, ugly exposition, indistinguishable character voices, way too much reliance on characters standing around telling the reader what is going on AND on having "outsiders" come in and explain it to the characters (shades of "Disassembled"), and the worst fan fic "Mary Sue" in Spider-Woman.
The fact that this is Marvel's top-selling title astonishes me.
