Went for a long run this morning and thought of a bunch of great ideas to write about, then I walked in the door and the phone rang and I forgot half of them. And the other half are too dirty to print. So you’re stuck with this crep:
This Gail Simone interview with Jackson Bostwick was fairly interesting. I watched SHAZAM! as a kid, but not religiously. The show's problem was that the Big Red Cheese never came on until the last five minutes or so and I don’t recall there ever being any supervillains. Bostwick certainly looked the part though, but that alone just wasn’t enough. Now ISIS -- hubba, hubba -- I never missed ISIS…
Is BATMAN published every three days now? I blinked and I’m somehow four issues behind. And I’m talking the main Batman title, not the 14 other related books…
It occurred to me this morning that Danny Glover may be too old now to play John Stewart in the movie, dang it...
It’s interesting that nearly every new super-speedster introduced in the last few years is black. (ASTRO CITY’s MPH, Bendis’ version of the Whizzer in SUPREME POWER and now “The Blur” in GROUNDED – and I’m sure there are others I’m overlooking.) Okay, yeah, in real life black athletes dominate the sprinting/speed events, but since ethnicity is not a factor in determining super-powered ability isn’t making a fast supertype black a bit of a stereotype? It doesn’t really bother so much as it seems a little too obvious. Of course this excludes the DCU where fast guys are white, period…
On the heels of that, are there any superheroes out there who’ve had their powers -- or facets of their powers -- attributed to their ethnicity? An odd question, I know…
There were any number of interesting articles and posts that came out of the San Diego Con -- despite the fact that the uniform reaction seemed to be that it was boring -- but the most fascinating was comic book historian Peter Sanderson’s column over at IGN.com. He’s now a regular read for me…
Halloween costumes are already hitting the stores. I’m always impressed by the level of detail they have nowadays. You couldn’t find a decent superhero costume when I was kid. (And you had to walk uphill both ways to the costume store - in the snow.) My kids have gone as Spider-man, Wolverine, Batman, Superman, Power Rangers. I think Star Wars characters are on the agenda this year. (Pictures will follow – but thankfully, not for a few months.)
dude when i was a kid there wasn't any buying of costumes my mom MADE our halloween costumes each year (she even made me a superman costume once)... oh man brings back some memories ;)

My mom wasn't exactly the most handy sort with a needle and thread (or in the kitchen - I can tell you some stories there, boy), so we did get to buy costumes. But it was always the same options: Caspar the Ghost, Bugs Bunny, a cheesy Batman or Superman, and a bunch of generic costumes (pirate, gorilla, indian, bunny, etc). And don't even get me started on the candy...

XS in one of the incarnations of the Legion of Super Heroes was black too, despite being Barry "Whiter Than White Bread" Allen's grand-daughter. You're right; it's weird, but not as weird as the number of black superheroes with the surname Stewart (Tyroc = Troy, Green Lantern = John, Supreme Power's Blur = Stanley). What's with that?
